Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions

Why do my gums bleed? I brush my teeth like I'm supposed to.

Brushing alone does not adequately stimulate the gums, especially in between teeth. If you have a problem with bleeding gums, it could be a sign of improper brushing technique or infrequent flossing, but other factors could be involved. If you're concerned, be sure to discuss it with our hygienist. If it's a simple matter of technique, our hygienist can show you the best ways to brush and floss. Also, hygienists are specially trained to identify other problems that might be involved.

Can I see Dr. Bonny even if my insurance company does not list her as a preferred provider?

Yes. In a preferred provider organization, the doctor or dentist agrees to the insurance company's fee schedule. We are not a part of any preferred provider organizations, but we can work with your insurance company.

There may be a minimal difference between the PPO rates and our fee structure, but your insurer will pay the PPO rates. You are responsible for the balance. As an example, a PPO's approved fee for a cleaning might be $90. Currently, Dr. Bonny's fee is $93. Your insurance company would pay their $90 PPO rate, and you would be responsible for the remaining $3.

If I have "dual insurance coverage," will I ever owe anything?

Not necessarily. In some cases, whatever the primary insurance doesn't cover can be paid by the secondary coverage. But if you have a policy that is "non-duplicating"- which means that if the primary insurance pays as much as or more than the secondary policy would have paid had it been the primary insurance — then no additional payment is made. There can also be mismatches in coverage. If the primary insurance does not pay for a procedure because it is not a "covered benefit" in that plan, the secondary insurance might only cover half the cost of the procedure. It can be confusing and situations vary. We make every effort to get an accurate breakdown of what your policies cover to give you a clear picture of what your cost will be.

Will insurance pay for teeth whitening?

No. Whitening is an elective, cosmetic procedure.

Is bleaching harmful to my teeth?

No. Studies show bleaching is a safe and effective way to whiten teeth. As with any product, overuse can cause unsatisfactory results. Excessive use of bleach can lead to gum irritation, a condition that is usually corrected by using less solution and reducing bleaching time. We can also apply a desensitizer to the teeth.

Is bleaching effective even if I have tetracycline staining?

It's worth trying. Some of our patients have experienced positive results using bleach to whiten tetracycline stains. It takes longer and requires consistent use of the whitening solution, but it can provide good results.

Why do I need X-rays?

Up to date X-rays are really the only way for Dr. Bonny to provide you with a complete and thorough examination of your teeth and gums. A mirror and explorer are great tools for examining the surfaces of your teeth. But to see what's going on between teeth, below the gumline, and inside the teeth and bone structure, X-rays are the best source of information.

Why might I need a crown?

Several factors could necessitate a crown. An aging, large, silver filling may be breaking down and weakening the underlying tooth. Your tooth may have been weakened by a root canal. Large portions of a tooth may be lost to decay. In each of these instances, a crown is needed to adequately restore the structural integrity of the compromised tooth.

What are veneers?

A good analogy is that veneers are to teeth as artificial fingernails are to your own nails. Veneers are made of very thin, very strong porcelain. The porcelain is transparent, allowing light to pass through for a very real, very natural look. Preparing for a veneer is very much like preparing for a crown. The difference is that the veneer covers only the front portion of the tooth.

Can you fill the gap between my front teeth?

Absolutely and this one step can make a remarkable difference in your overall appearance. There are several ways to fill spaces between teeth. Porcelain veneers or full crowns can be custom made for a lasting solution that looks natural. Another alternative is to use "composite," a compound that is the same color as your teeth and bonds directly to them.

I want white fillings; are they the best?

Opinions vary on the use of composite (white) fillings over amalgam (silver). Dr. Bonny's experience is that amalgam fillings have a low incidence of replacement. Composite fillings have a "moderate" need for replacement over time. The material itself is not the issue. The most important factor in determining how long a filling will last is the technique used to place the material. Most often, Dr. Bonny uses composite fillings for the aesthetically superior result, though some patients request composites specifically due to concern about the makeup of amalgam. Both types of fillings are safe, and there are times when amalgam provides the best solution to restoring a compromised tooth.

I hate going to the dentist. How will Dr. Bonny minimize my fear?

Fear of dental procedures is as old as the profession itself. We are very sensitive to the anxiety some patients feel and we can help alleviate your tension and fears. In some cases, pre-medication can help you relax prior to an appointment. You might also be a candidate for "laughing gas" (nitrous oxide). Dr. Bonny is very flexible. If you need a break during a long procedure, she can arrange one. If one long visit would be less stressful to you than several short visits, she can arrange that as well. The bottom line is that we want you to be comfortable getting the regular dental care you need for overall health and well being.
